Having such different learners in the classroom is beautiful, but sometimes it creates challenges (or all the time, actually). Not only do we have a pretty big age range, but each kiddo has such specific needs, strengths, struggles, and desires. It is a great way for me to stay on my toes and accommodate for each child depending on his or her need...and the day...and the mood.
Here is a perfect example. I have one buddy who goes into total space-out mode when a video comes on. No joke. He could be completely across the room working on something entirely different...and he is walking in a zombie trance towards the computer the minute he hears any sound come from our mac. But on this day, we were doing our planet study, and we really needed the computer for more than one learner. Luckily we have a giant screen and can have multiple windows open if needed. So I took our beyond gorgeous (donated!!) Mac and taped a piece of cardboard up the middle, allowing my fifth grader to watch an amazing NASA video on their exploration of Mars, while the little hooded creature could study Jupiter's moons--in peaceful oblivion from his classmate sharing the screen. Thank you giant scrap bin. You saved the day.
