One of my greatest joys in this little school is that there is the freedom to spend more time on projects if the kiddos so desire. Our last science investigation, for example, was a stain lab to figure out which cleaning and household products removed stains most effectively. The crew worked in pairs to try out different products on nasty chocolate, ketchup, grape juice, mustard, and marker stains.
We finished the lab and one of my guys asked why so many people bought Shout when he found vinegar to work much better. This question opened up a brilliant conversation about advertising and how people are persuaded to use different products. We analyzed several different commercials to identify how certain goods/services speak to consumers. (On a side note, I was shocked by my crew's knowledge of insurance advertisements. I kid you not--they gave me the slogans for Geico, All State, State Farm, and Progressive.)
These conversations turned into product development and commercial writing. Here is what they came up with. They are so stinking brilliant and creative. Maybe we need to work on our acting and public speaking, but the creative process behind their advertisements was incredible to watch.
And, yes, if you are wondering, there is a battle in the last video between a booger and the Cluboom mascot. I am amazed how boys can find any excuse to use swords. Brilliant!
