Tea with Milk

We recently read a beautiful story about a young girl who grew up in the United States, but moved with her parents back to Japan as a teenager. This Allen Say story, Tea with Milk, shares the struggles and heartache of a young woman missing her life in America while learning to appreciate her Japanese heritage. A recurring theme throughout the story is how she misses little bits and pieces of American culture. One thing she misses most is tea with milk, since in Japan she was only drinking herbal tea.

My kiddos inquired about this tea with milk, wondering if people really do drink their tea like that here in America. The Scottish and English part of me was scandalized. So we had tea. With milk and sugar. From a great tea pot. With adorable tea cups.

We reread the story and sipped our sweet, creamy tea. It was magical.
