We have continued right along--in our year-long study of life science--into the wonderful world of plant life. This week has included an investigation of the different types of soil. Many intriguing questions have been asked that have led us to wonder which type of soil best supports healthy and strong plant growth. We studied the permeabilty and porosity of various soils (potting soil, clay, gravel, and sand) to hypothesize which one would allow for successful plant growth. We will have to continue our investigation to find out which one is best suited for planting seeds.
Leave us your thoughts: Which soil do you think is best suited for planting seeds?
In case you need a bit of help, here are our results for the permeability of each soil.
1) Gravel (let the most water through, most permeable)
2) Potting soil
3) Sand
4) Clay (let the least water through, least permeable)
Also, please note that we thrive on low-budget science investigations. If you have been to Covecrest, those are in fact the plastic cups, styrofoam bowls, and coffee filters used in the kitchen :)
