A Springtime Symphony

It has been a great joy to see the arrival of spring at our little school. We have loved letting the fresh air into our classroom, and watching as the world blooms and blossoms around us. Not only are things looking more alive and vibrant, but our environment seems to be exploding with sound! I cannot be sure about the number of different bird species that live here at our mountain home, but it has been a beautiful symphony to usher us into our learning everyday.

I found an excellent collection of children's poetry to share with Noah and Mads, and have been looking forward to reading a new poem every day. We giggled all morning long after reading this clever woodpecker poem by Ted Hughes. Here it is to brighten your day!

                       Woodpecker is a rubber-necked
But has a nose of steel.
He bangs his head against the wall
                     And cannot even feel.

                 When Woodpecker's jack-hammer head
                 Starts up its dreadful din
Knocking the dead bough double dead
How do his eyes stay in?

Pity the poor dead oak that cries
               In terrors and in pains.
               But pity more Woodpecker's eyes
              And bouncing rubber brains.
