Knighthood is hard.

Madison is continuing to study the middle ages, and we have been fascinated this week by the age of knights and chivalry. She and I worked this morning to define the role of knight and further discuss their place and duty in society. Mads did an illustration for our timeline and jotted down a brief description:

Knights had to be loyal to God, not just to the king  They  had to take care of the Church and the weak, like women, monks, priests, widows, and orphans. They were chivalrous. Chivalry was the act of loyalty, trust, generosity and bravery.

I am often surprised that Noah is listening so carefully to Madison and I when he is working on something else. He responded with a bit of anxiety. "Hmmm. That sounds like a lot of work. I don't know if I would like to be a knight. I mean, would I really just have to stand and watch the castle all day? And work so hard to be so kind? No, I don't think I will be one. I wouldn't have time to play my DS."

I tried to convince him that it would be such an honorable role! To guard and honor and protect! To care and provide for those in need! How lovely! How romantic!

"Eh. No thanks."  :)
