That being said, things are plugging along in our sweet mountain school. We have had some mega-changes take place since the beginning of the year--including professional development from one sainted veteran teacher to this needy-newbie (Lesa I am forever indebted to you!). Another big change has been the restructuring and reorganization of our classroom environment in order to make our space more functional for this mixed group of kiddos.
We moved all of our books into one amazingly wonderful space that has been lovingly named the "Red Reading Library" (with a red carpet, shelves, cozy chair, pillows, and more...hence the "Red"). The kids did an amazing job of organizing all of our books and categorizing them into groups such as "History books", "Hilarious Animal Books", or "Books that we've published". I sat back and watched as my brilliant students spent two full days making this space all their own.

They were so elated about this new library one day that the idea came from nowhere. "How about a festival to celebrate our new Red Reading Library. We could do a ribbon cutting." So we did just that.
A great deal of work went into the planning of such an epic event. I can honestly say that I sat back and watched as the following were organized, planned and executed:
-A library tour
-A "favorite story character" painting station
-A bookmark making station
-A book title scramble
-A library scavenger hunt
-A Shel Silverstein Reader's Theater
-A read aloud station
-Literature trivia that included a Reading King and Queen crowning (obviously)
It was an amazing, joyful celebration. Thanks to the incredible community in which we live, we had at least 40 attendees throughout the course of the day. The kiddos were exhausted by the end, but so accomplished. Praise God!
