It has been a great day for doing all kinds of new thinking. This school year we have loved learning about many different brilliant thinkers throughout ancient history--and today has been a day of learning about a more current brilliant mind. Although we didn't know too much about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. before today, we have discovered a great deal, and made a lot of connections!
After watching a great Brainpop video (Check it out!) about Dr. King's life and mission, we discovered more about the Civil Right's Movement with the beautiful story Rosa by Nikki Giovanni. We made all kinds of inferences about what kind of person Rosa Parks must have been, and what courage she must have shown to stick up to the bus driver on that December morning in Montgomery. We heard part of Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech, and discussed what he must have meant by white children and black children holding hands and being friends. Noah and Madison made brilliant connections to all kinds of books we've read such as the The Story of Ruby Bridges, our big book of African American folk tales, and More Than Anything Else (a story about Booker T. Washington).
We sure had a lot of tough questions about why there was segregation, what equality means, and how some people felt the way they did about people of a different race. We did all kinds of mind stretching to try and understand what it must have been like during the time of the Montgomery bus boycott, or how it would feel to listen to Dr. King's speech in Washington D.C. We might still have some questions, but we will keep you posted on our further research. Let us know if you have any information we can add to our schema!
